My Evening with the Girl Scouts

On Tuesday evening I had the privilege of speaking with a local Girl Scouts troop (which my Lily officially joined on Thursday morning). I love sharing what I know about photography with others, especially young, budding photogs. They following is what we covered. Feel free to share it the young photographers in your life!

1. View~ Take an old matboard or cut a rectangle from an empty box of cereal (recycling at it's finest), hold it up and see what is inside. This represents the viewfinder of the camera. Move around until you get the picture you want in the frame. (This helps them to concentrate on what they are taking a picture of, instead of pointing and shooting at everything.)
2. Holding steady~ Learning the proper way to hold the camera helps you avoid those blurry pictures. Your right hand should grip the right side of the camera, with your index finger loosely above the shutter and your thumb on the back side of the camera. Your left and should support the weight of the camera or lens. Using the viewfinder makes it easier to hold the camera closely to the body. Tuck your elbows in to your sides, for extra stability lean against a wall or other sturdy structure. Taking these steps will help with camera shake although using a tripod is the ultimate way to avoid shaking.
3. Backgrounds~ Check your back and fore grounds. Make sure that your subject doesn't have anything that looks like it is growing out of their head. Like tree branches or someones fingers! If you notice something either have your subject move or you could move over for a clearer shot.
4. Straight~ Hold the camera straight when you snap the shutter. While this has been blown out of the water as of late, with all of the new trendy tilted pics, it is still an important factor to teach young photographers. After all you have to know the rules to break the rules!
5. Close~ Get in close to the subject for greater detail. You don't get the detail of a persons eyes or the texture of a flower or wetness of an animal nose when you are several feet away from your subject. If your camera doesn't have a zoom lens, then use your legs and walk closer to the subject. My favorite lenses are my primes, and I use my little 'ol legs all day (walking closer and then backing up to compose the perfect picture).
6. Balance~ Shoot lots of different things, people, animals, flowers, landscapes and anything else you can find.
7. Interest~ Find a focal point (something of interest), it adds interest to an image. Ask yourself, "What is my subject?" Then find a way of framing it to draw the attention to the subject.
8. Thirds~ The infamous Rule Of Thirds, by knowing this one little rule, you can add much more drama to a picture, then again it also goes back to Knowing 'Em Before You Can Break 'Em! This is a harder on to teach to younger photographers, but simply teaching them to get they subject out of the center of the frame, can have tremendous impact of their images.
9. Experiment~ Have fun with perspective. Shoot higher or lower than your subject or even get on the same level as your subject. Don't just stand with your feet on the ground. See the world from different levels. It can be a lot of fun.
10. Settings~ Learn the settings for your camera. The owners manual can be very enlightening!
11. Review~ Review your child's images with them. Let them tell you what they like about each image and then you tell them what you like, and discuss what could make the image better.
12. Shoot~ Go out and shoot, we all learn from doing! Try different techniques, find what you like.

I for one can not wait to see what images will come from the next generation of photographers. They have such a learning advantage over us older folks. They are getting instant feedback from their efforts. Whereas when I was younger, I would shoot a roll and wait, when it was finally developed, most of the time I had forgotten what techniques or settings I used to get the image. I was also limited to the number of images that I could take, film and developing could get quiet expensive, so my mother always told me. So let your children shoot away, review their pictures, set a limit on the number of keep pics (because it does take up space on the hard drive to keep loads of pictures), and print only their most favorites.

At the end of our meeting each girl received a shirt, that said "Take a picture, it'll last longer" and a camera (film of coarse, keeping it old school). I offered to have them developed for them along with a critique of their work. I am really looking forward to their images. Good luck girls, and most of all have fun!

I finally had a chance to photograph my wonderful in-laws last night! This is just a sneak peek for my sis, I know she was dying to see them last night! I had so much fun with them last night! I am blessed to have such wonderful people in my life, Thank you, God! There are still a lot of pics to work on, but I had to post a tidbit today! Love you guys!

Never Idle ~ Worship Band from Shawnee Area!

I had the pleasure of photographing "Never Idle", last week! "Never Idle" is a worship band from the Shawnee, Oklahoma area. The members photographed to the left are, Kevin Idleman, his daughter, Macie Cantrell and her husband Kevin Cantrell. Thanks guys, I had a blast.

Maternity Shoot with the Mehan's

Saturday evening I had a maternity session with Ryan and Jeremy. We started outside in the field, where we all baked in the sun and hoped that we didn't end up with chiggers, by the end of the shoot! Afterwards, they braved the clutter at the studio to do the more intimate shots.

I can't wait for the little guy to get here, I am looking forward to taking his portraits.

Hand Painted Backdrop!

My mother bought a bolt of fabric last summer at a yard sale, it was pretty ugly (no offense, mom)! There was so much there, over 20 yards ~ that's an under estimate too! So after making over my oldest daughter's bedroom, I decided to put the left over paint to use.

I spread out 8 feet of fabric in the yard and went to work. My husband said that I looked like Jaskson Pollock out in the yard, flinging paint all over the place. So what you see is the result of my painting frenzy. I think that it turned out rather well. I painted the chair (a left behind relic of my daughter's former room) to match the backdrop as well. Lily, my youngest daughter, was too excited to pose for me (can't you tell)!!

Anyways, I have loads of fabric left and my new favorite place at Lowes is the mistint paint stand. So needless to say you will be seeing somemore "Jenn Smith ~ Hand Painted Backdrops".

Trevor Senior 2011

I had the great pleasure of photographing Trevor last night. It was a hot, sultry evening, but you couldn't tell it from the pictures.
Trev you are a super cool guy, I am so glad that I got to take you senior pics!
When you get back to Wisconsin, send some of that cooler weather back this way!
I wish I could be there to watch you graduate. Congratulations, I am so proud of you!

My Pretty Penny

Well last week was the one of the worst weeks that I have had in a while. My pretty, Penny (English Springer Spaniel) was run over and had to be put down. Me and my girls were a bucket of tears. She was a great dog and will be missed! We love you, Penny!

A Day of MUCH NEEDED Rest!

Today I finally have a day to catch up on some personal things. Although they are not the most exciting things (laundry, dishes, cleaning house, etc.), they still needed my attention.
The last few monthes have been extremely hectic. This weeks weather has not helped matters. I have been praying for those that have been affected by the storms. I hope that they are able to pick up the pieces and move on, without too much heartache.
So I will clean my house today without much complaining, and thank God that I still have one to clean! Don't get me wrong I will still be longing for that day of MUCH NEEDED Rest, the entire time;)!!

Busy Bees!!

I haven't had a chance to slow down in so long. I am sorry, that this is such a boring blog. If I kept you up to date on all that goes on in my crazy day to day doings, I think it would be overly stimulating. I know that it can be for me!! I have been photographing many new and exciting clients. Trying to work on the studio as much a possible. I have also been running back and forth from soccer games and track meets. I am so ready for summer break! I need to catch my breath. Don't get me wrong I am loving being so busy, but I am also ready to get in the studio. I have some newborn pics coming up and hope to be in there by then. Well I hope that you were able to catch your breath while reading this post. I will post some progress pics soon of the studio.

New Year New Beginnings!

What a boring blogger I am! To my defense, I have been busy. With senior announcements, a few senior shoots, being a mother and wife, and last but certainly not least---Ironing out details about my new STUDIO! I am so excited and scared! It is really crazy to feel all of the emotions at once! I like it!
I am so excited about what I will be able to offer you. I think of stuff several times a day. My husband will tell you, because I call him every time I think of something new.
I will be posting some pics as the process goes along. It will be a long one, it needs a lot of TLC!!

Valentine Cards For The Kids!

My girls and I decided to do something different for Valentine's Day this year. We were walking down the Valentine isle at the local discount store (no need to do any unnecessary advertising), and my girls were commenting on how the cards were the same as they were every year. We wanted to do something different and special, so this year we took their picture and put them on to this small cards. The long one is a book mark that folds in half, and the others are this size and feel of business cards, which is fun for my oldest daughter. Parents this is something to keep in mind for next year. I am starting to lay out my marketing a year in advance, next year I will be doing some fun, short valentines sessions at the beginning of January. I will send out and post more info when that time comes, which unfortunately will be here all too soon.

Winter Wonderland

This photo was taken after the latest wintry, snow storm, Mother Nature left behind. I hope that you all kept warm and safe. We hunkered down, with blankets, movies, and plenty of good things to eat. Thankfully we didn't lose power, like we did during the '08 ice storm. I hope that everyone was as lucky as us, if not I hope that you are lucky enough to have your electricity back on!
After the busy week that I had last week, I welcomed the rest. This has given me the opportunity to try out what I learned during the workshop I attended on Monday, and the seminar I attended on Wednesday. I had a blast, and learned a lot that I will pass on to you in the form of better images. My promise to you is to keep up to date on the latest trends, to offer you and your family timeless portraits.
I will try to keep posting regularly to keep everyone up to date on latest portrait offerings, and any other ramblings that I feel the need to share.
